Governors - Supporting Your Headteacher
Whilst it is accepted that the role of a school governor is to hold the headteacher to account, a pro-active governor understands a part of their role is to monitor the wellbeing of their headteacher. Suggestions from HTs and Governors on how to support HT wellbeing
The following thoughts and ideas are from Governors and HTs across our Alliance.
- Meeting regularly, but not for the sake of it, as time is precious.
- Allowing time for a cup of tea and general chat so Heads can off-load if needed.
- Meeting at a time that best suits the Head not the governors.
- Making sure that all governors are prepared for meetings so that they are kept within a realistic time scale.
- Allowing Heads some time to work from home away from distraction.
- Recognising and appreciating the workload although there are limitations in how a governor maybe able to help with this.
- Governors are mindful when planning monitoring visits eg: this may not be as urgent or needed as frequently after the school's Ofsted inspection.
- Recognise when things are tough in school, bringing in a treat to share.
