Thoughts & Tips from Swaledale Alliance Headteachers

Listed below is a selection of thoughts, tips and advice from Headteachers across our Alliance.

Some of our content may seem obvious but when we are reaching our mental capacity, it can be nice just to have a reminder of what's important and what may help.

Organisation

Make Lists!

  • Prioritise what really matters, delegate and don't be afraid to ask for help.
  • Keep things in perspective.
  • Accept you will not always complete the list

Prioritise well

  • Quality Teaching & learning
  • Excellent Behaviour
  • Relationships
  • Comms with parents/carers/pupils

"Eat the big frog first!"

  • Deal with / allocate time to for the big tasks instead of putting them off and focussing on the smaller easy jobs.

Park ideas/tasks

  • Some things can't be done now but are still worth it - so park it!

Emails

  • Delete or file actioned emails
  • Pin emails that require further attention
  • Turn off email alerts when you are off eg: weekends

Don't reinvent the wheel

  • Ask colleagues for copies of policies or SIP.
  • Be aware of how much time you spend on a document that is for discussion or a working document
  • Borrow example of good resources

Paperwork hour (or two)

  • Diarise time to attend to this on a weekly basis.

Executive Headship

  • Standardise policies and procedures across your schools.
  • Have a strong base leader or deputy in each school.

Relationships

Look after yourself

  • You can't pour from an empty cup

Support your staff well so they can support you

  • Build a strong SLT around you

Build relationships with all stakeholders.

  • Be visible around the school
  • Talk to parents

Network with colleagues

  • Clusters
  • Regional & National Events
  • Swaledale Alliance HTs meetings

Work with your SIA

Communications

Communicate (not just emails) regularly with:

  • Staff
  • Pupils
  • Parent

Consider when you communicate

  • Schedule your emails to send during acceptable work hours
  • Don't expect staff to contact you during their non-work hours unless urgent
  • Avoid engaging in staff social media/WhatsApp etc

Being Bold

Consider 'no contact' time

  • eg at weekends

Consider your start & leaving time

  • You do not have to be first in and last out

Consider your schools structure

  • Does it work for you?

Consider "Good enough is good enough"

Venture outside your school

  • What are other schools locally or nationally doing?

Don't be scared to query the norm

Outside of School

Plan time away from everything where you can completely switch off.

  • Exercise
  • Meet friends
  • Hobbies
  • or just something you look forward too eg (scone & jam)

Have someone to rant to...

  • This may be a colleague or friend
