Sophie is currently the EYFS leader at Le Cateau School in Catterick Garrison; before joining Le Cateau Sophie worked as the Assistant Head at Heide School in Germany.
She has spent much of her career working with and supporting service families and understands the advantages and challenges that this holds for this group of children. Sophie's experience in Early Years has led to an interest in the impact that the learning environment, both indoors and outdoors, can have on learning. She is involved in developing continuous provision into Year One and how to build on the practise established in the Early Years Foundation Stage.
The past year has seen the development of Early reading in school and Sophie works closely with Key Stage One colleagues to ensure that there is a systematic and robust approach to Early reading and the teaching of phonics. Sophie is passionate about developing Early Reading and making sure that this is closely linked to developing children’s love of reading and books.
“Children are getting off to a fast start in their reading. The systematic and rigorous teaching of phonics starts in Nursery and moves into Reception. All adults are skilled in teaching phonics, activities are targeted well to meet the needs of every child and work is well matched to children’s abilities.
The high profile of reading is prevalent through displays and activities around classrooms.”
